An immobiliser is an electronic device fitted to a vehicle that prevents the engine from starting unless the immobiliser has been disabled via the correct key or code. Immobilisers have been required to be fitted to all new vehicles in Australia since 2001. Aftermarket immobilisers are available for vehicles without factory fitted units.
Statistics show that vehicles fitted with engine immobilisers are far less likely to be stolen, especially by opportunistic theives, than those without. Only 7% of all vehicles stolen in Australia each year are fitted with an immobiliser, and in most of those cases the thief obtained access to the original key.
